Grüner Veltliner

Updated: Jul 29, 2023

Grüner Veltliner("grew-ner felt-lee-ner")

Grüner Veltliner, also can be written as Grüner Weißgipfler is a white wine produced mainly in the country of Austria, but can be grown throughout other parts of Europe, i.e. Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Also seeing vine growth outside of Europe in countries like Northern Italy, United States, and New Zealand, and even going as far as my home state, Pennsylvania showing a great expression of how well this grape can really thrive! In my time, I have had only one Grüner Veltliner from PA, and I have to say I was pleased with them and thought even though it didn't match up to Austrian's version, it still showed really well and would definitely recommend it if you can find it. The one I can remember, is the Greendance winery, which is located in Mount Pleasant, PA. I was able to sample this wine at Ligonier Days(PA and possibly surrounding states) know what I'm talking about. They had their booth up along with other wineries, and was the only winery I actually ended up buying a bottle from. It was delicious and it was only $20.

Grüner Veltliner's Flavor Profile

Grüner Veltliner's flavor profile is very unique and the reason why I absolutely adore this grape. The wine first has mouth-watering acidity that really makes Grüner super food-friendly. You can find flavors of grapefruit, lime, nectarine and peach, all depending on when the grapes are picked at ripeness level, along with flavors of herbaceous(asparagus, oregano), peppery(white pepper or green bell pepper), and mineral(crushed gravel or wet slate) driven wines. The peppery tone is really the reason why I enjoy this wine. It's the flavor note that makes the wine stand out from the rest of the whites and can be compared to Riesling at a young age, without the spice, obviously, and is more comparable to a Chardonnay as it ages.

Grüner Veltliner's Parentage

Grüner Veltliner, which most probably derives from a crossing with Traminer, another white wine variety. The second parent remains unconfirmed, but it is thought to be a century old variety discovered called St. Georgen in Burgenland.

Grüner Veltliner's Food Pairing

Grüner Veltliner is crisp and a perfect palate cleanser for richly flavored foods. While Grüner wines pair with classic Austrian dishes like sautéed kidneys, its newfound glory is with Asian spices. It’s also one of the few still wines that hold up against challenging vegetable fare such as artichoke and grilled asparagus.
