Godello + Video Link

Updated: Aug 8, 2023

Godello(Go-day-oh) is native to Spain and Portugal and usually doesn't leave these countries. It is thought that this grape originated in Galicia, Spain, located on the western side.

Godello had a close brush with extinction in the 20th Century, with only a few hundred of its vines remaining by the 1970s. Thanks to a project to rescue this grape variety led by Horacio Fernández and Luis Hidalgos, more than 1000 hectares (2471 acres) of Godello vines are now in its supposed native home of Galicia!

The downfall of Godello is that it has small-sized berries produced in closely packed, small bunches. Godello is early ripening and thrives in dry sites. It is sensitive to fungal diseases, including powdery mildew and botrytis bunch rot, so the grape needs a lot of care to thrive correctly and produce a good wine!

Some food pairings that sound great with Godello are Zucchini risotto, roasted chicken with lemon, and any fish, such as white fish, will balance well with the flavor components of Godello!
