Clare Valley, Australia

Updated: Jul 29, 2023

Clare Valley, Australia

Clare Valley is unremarkably the most benchmark wine regions for Riesling. Dry Riesling is characterized here as "World-Class," being the same category with the top Rieslings from Germany, France, and even the Finger Lakes! The wines are particularly famous for their depth of classic Riesling flavors such as exotic citrus, lime and orange blossoms, crunchy apples with a healthy dose of minerals, and crisp natural acidity. The top wines can also be cellared for 20 or more years. A lot of people don't think Riesling can age, the reason it can is because of it's high acidity. Acidity is one of the four components when you're aging wine.

Climate and Viticulture

Clare Valley's climate is considered a mediterranean, which is long warm, summer days and cooler nights, this will ultimately help with better hang time, so will help with grape ripeness as well retains crisp acidity from the grape specifically, which is why Riesling thrives here so well! Alluvial soils which consists of limestone and rock. Ultimately, limestone is the secret to a stellar wine, and rock will help retain the heat from the sun so you will see more full-bodied, higher alcohol level wines. While there are no legally-defined subregions in the Clare Valley, the topography naturally divides the region into smaller localities. Many wine lovers would be familiar with localities such as Auburn, Watervale, Sevenhill, Polish Hill River and Clare.

In Conclusion

Now that you know a little bit more information on the Clare Valley, go ahead and seek out one for yourself. I have one currently in my store right now and so do other Premium Collection stores. Check out the review I did on the Rieslingfreak No. 33 Clare Valley Riesling 2022.
