Bordeaux Supérieur + Video Link

Updated: Jul 29, 2023

Bordeaux Supérieur is an appellation tier applied to wines within the generic Bordeaux AOP zone and all use the classic Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and the lost child Carménère.

The Supérieur term of Bordeaux represents a superior version of the generalized Bordeaux AOC. Tiny amount of white wine are made using this title, but the majority of it is red! There are only two French regions who have adapted this "superior" term. The other is Beaujolais. The term is actually more common in Italy where they use the Superiore term.

The appellation is open to wines from anywhere in the Bordeaux wine region, which stretches 130 kilometers (80 miles) from Sainte-Foy in the east to the very north-western tip of the Médoc. The areas on the Right Bank of the Gironde river north of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol have a greater concentration of vineyards in this classification.
